Description
The Mount Ainslie 500 brings the 500 Over 10 format to Canberra with a compact 10km route, 500 metres of vertical gain and three distinct climbs packed into the loop. The route starts and finishes at the Mount Ainslie lookout carpark, so the summit is not just scenery — it is the line.
Origins
Created by Brynn as part of a two-course Canberra contribution to the 500 Over 10 library, the route uses Mount Ainslie as the centrepiece for a draft course that is home to some of Australia's top trail runners.
Status
Unratified, yet to be run, and still officially a draft course. The numbers stack up beautifully, but the Committee awaits real-world strava activities to examine, before final ratification.
Reserve Character
Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve is a 637-hectare protected area adjoining Mount Majura Nature Reserve, forming a large area of wooded country overlooking Canberra from the north-east. The summit sits 842 metres above sea level, giving the course a proper hilltop identity overlooking the nation's capital.

Ngunnawal Country
The reserve is on Ngunnawal Country and is recognised by ACT Parks as a significant Aboriginal women’s cultural place. More than 30 known Aboriginal heritage sites are protected within the reserve, including artefact scatters and culturally modified trees. Stay on track, respect the place, and leave what you find.
Place History
Mount Ainslie was named after James Ainslie, Robert Campbell’s overseer, who brought sheep to the Limestone Plains in 1826. The reserve also carries quarry, early settlement and military history — a lot of backstory for a course whose main instruction is still fairly simple: go up, come down, go up again.
